Job opportunity: Web programmer/developer

Written by Adrian Holovaty on May 31, 2003

I interrupt this blogging hiatus to announce a job opportunity.

World Online, my employer here in beautiful Lawrence, Kansas, is looking for another Web programmer to help build cool stuff for our three sites, LJWorld.com, Lawrence.com and KUsports.com.

Our team and our sites have an outstanding reputation in the online journalism industry. We do things other news sites don't even *dream* of doing, and we're not afraid to take risks. Here's what people have been writing about us lately:

If you're in the online news biz, this is the opportunity of your career. If you're not in the online news biz, don't let that scare you; journalism experience is preferred but not required.

Here's a general idea of what we're looking for:

  • Expert knowledge of PHP on the Apache Web server.
  • Expert knowledge of HTML/XHTML.
  • Experience designing, maintaining and programming Web interfaces to databases, particularly MySQL.
  • Experience building custom Web publishing systems/tools and managing dynamic Web sites.
  • Familiarity (and comfort) with Web standards, CSS, regular expressions, Perl, Javascript and the challenges of presenting information online.

You'd work directly with me. I am a nice guy.

Lawrence is a great place. It's a college town, 30 miles from Kansas City, with a thriving music scene, excellent local restaurants and an outstanding downtown that has put two malls out of business. I'm a city person -- I was born and raised in Chicago and worked in Atlanta before this job -- but I love this place.

If you're interested, contact me at aholovaty [at] ljworld [dot] com.

UPDATE, MANY YEARS LATER: This job was taken by Simon Willison.

Could I tele-commute? :)

Sounds like a match for me, but I'm not in a position to move at this time.

Best of luck finding someone.

Thanks, kpaul. Yes, you'd have to live in Lawrence, although we would consider allowing telecommuting to some degree. (e.g., once a week, which is what I do.)

Great, make it sound even better. ;)

If I was single I would give my left arm to work for ljworld.com, but my wife would never move to Kansas. It sounds like a great opportunity for some lucky soul.

Thanks for the endorsement, Dan!

I have none of the expert knowledge, experience, familiarity or comfort you need. Does the writing/content side need anything?

Well I live in Shrewsbury, Shropshire... United Kingdom... any chance of funding my move?

I don't know PHP/MySQL that well, but I'd need to give two months notice anyway... and in that time I could pick up everything that needs to be known. I'm a fast learner!
